What would happen if your hard drive was damaged from a power surge. What are the chances of being able to retrieve the data from it? One of my hard drives has recently suffered that fate. From the sound that the HD makes, the motor still works fine, however the BIOS sometimes doesn't recognise the drive, while other times it does recognise it however when it goes to load up Windows, the Scandisk utility appears but then the PC restarts immediately after.

those are magneto-optical discs. CDs are optical-optical.
