Most schools don't expect your parents to pay more than 10% of their annual income. Tuition is pretty steep but so is the amount of aid offered.
From classmates I've talked to, most of the barriers aren't the explicit cost of college. A girl in my class has superlative grades and achievements, but can't go to a college more than an hour away from home because she has 4 younger siblings at home she must take care of.
