I used to work in automotive design and I think this is a very interesting idea. I am sure a solution to adequate performance in a side impact could be found, the up and down support from the middle strut is not as important as you might think. Also mechanical override could easily fixed power loss issues. Only one that would suck is denting (of door or side tracks) making it hard to open close door.I like it.

Many regular car doors won't open in an accident anyway. Quite often the fire-crews need to use (what we in the UK call the Jaws of Life) to cut away the roof in order to free trapped patients from a crashed vehicle.If your car falls into a river, you are going to have trouble opening the door until the car is completely full of water.I agree that there should be some kind of "manual release" but I do like the design. |
