Doc Watson - 1991 - Black Mountain Rag. I've included Doc's introduction and explanation of his background with this particular tune. I've always loved the interesting anecdote that Doc developed his now legendary flatpicking style while playing a Les Paul (electric solid body guitar) while he was playing in a Rockabilly band in the 1950's. Additionally, I've heard that he actually didn't even own an acoustic guitar at that time. It's interesting that this style has since become associated with, nearly exclusively, acoustic guitars, particularly Martin dreadnoughts. I've always wondered what kind of reception a picker would get at the National Flatpicking Contest in Winfield Kansas if he were to show up to compete with a Les Paul in hand!

Well, I don't think that was much of 'humble' opinion... but ;) Beg to differ. Tabs serve as a basis for musicians to share things at a distance without having to record. Tabs are meant to be a set of guideposts... A good musician knows how to use tabs and notes as a springboard for musical expression. Whether you get caught up or stuck in the tabs is up to you.

Yeah I know when I started guitar lessons I learned how to play scales and other things on it. I got a tab once private investigations and it didn't help me at all then I got a dvd of how to play dire straits songs and it hepled me better. So I prefer nowadays just learning by ear. Reading music is worse in my opinion.

Tablature is possibly the worst thing for a real musician...if you're just an average joe playing something on the weekend, maybe it's alright. But it seriously inhibits growth and actual comprehension of what you hear, which is why playing by ear is the only real way to play, in my humble opinion.

Same with me I hate reading music and I'm not that much into tabs like I used to cause I always play with my ear nowadays. I used to using my ear so I'm sticking with that. It just goes to show yeah that you have a good taste and ear for music.

i'm a self-taught guitarist and i cant read notes/tablature/chords properly. i play by ear cause that works best 4 me. watching this guy makes ya think if notes are even necessary
